Thank you, Michael
First, let me thank you for reading and taking time to respond to The Last, Best Reason for Newspapers. It is one of the most gratifying parts of doing this type of work is to hear from those who have found the articles worthy of their time. I really appreciate it.
I couldn’t agree more with your comments about the sad loss of staff-written obituaries. The joy of old newspapers is that it was before a time when everything was being driven towards automation, rationalization and algorithms. There were ‘humans in the loop’ which can’t help but give the prose more character and richness.
When it came time time for my father’s obituary, I simply wrote and published something here on Medium. It may lack the glibness and polish of a professionally written obituary but I still hope it paints a vivid picture of this remarkable man’s life. Perhaps that will become the trend in the future? Those who know the subjects best will take it upon themselves to put ‘pen to paper’ so to speak.
Thank you, again, and best regards…~TCG
